Jack’s Room Moodboard and Inspiration

Hopefully you’ve already seen the before blog post from yesterday to see where the nursery is starting from. If not, definitely check that out so you get a sense of what we’re trying to do in here!

While I want this space to be cute and cozy, we really needed some functionality first and foremost. Jack needed a big kid bed and he desperately needs some storage. Everything else is kind of bonus points. It doesn’t need new paint or need new art but if you’re going to change it up, might as well just go for it. Some call it project creep; I like to call it seizing the opportunity. So here we are, making over Jack’s room - giving it more functionality, more appropriate furniture for a not-so-little-kid (sigh), and an updated look.

The main goals here are a new bed and upgraded storage. I found a West Elm day bed on OfferUp for $250 (score!) and after a couple months of only finding backordered dates into 2023 or $2,000 pieces I liked (or both), this was a really great find. As for storage, the majority of our budget and bandwidth has gone into a new bookshelf for the room and an upgraded closet system. I’ll get into the closet system soon, but I know the bookshelf is going to be great functionally and also for adding some warmth to the cool-toned room.

Eventually we’ll probably say goodbye to the beloved blue corner chair and replace it with the shelf’s matching deck but for now, we still really enjoy sitting together and reading and cuddling so it has a lot of life left to live in this room. I also like the idea of bringing the blue wall into the rest of the room instead of having an accent wall (just commit to the color, friends!) but we’ll keep the wall paneling to just the wall with the bed.

As for helpful inspiration, you can check my Pinterest board here. But I really wanted to share the spaces that I went back to again and again that helped me get a solid feel for our own space.

I feel really good about this direction and I have even more ideas brewing (again… seizing the opportunity!) for some fun DIYs to make the room feel extra special. A fun paint moment on the back of the door?! A fun paint moment on a thrifted piece of furniture? I’m still not convinced that the bed should stay white or that the existing curtains are quite right… I’m okay if this room takes a little time and if these little touches feel more spontaneous than perfectly planned. The overall vibe is cozy, fun, and collected over time which feels right for a kids room which is honestly never done, anyway.
