Holiday Home Decor 2016

Hi friends! Happy Wednesday! I'm so excited to share today's post with you because I have been SO excited to decorate for the holidays in our new home this year. Since we moved last year during Christmas (on the road Christmas day!), this holiday season deserved some extra special attention. I planned for quite a while, and spent some time making a lot of things to make sure our halls were decked and our home felt extra festive.

Coming In

Porch Tree (Old from Home Goods) | Pine Garlands | Red Berry Garlands | White Cotton Wreaths (I added the berries myself)

Complete with Mistletoe in the foyer, I wanted the entry to the house to feel inviting and Christmas-ey without crowding it. It's not much space anyway, so I needed a couple key elements like garland up the staircase, festive wreaths, and Christmas cards to pull it all together.

I purchased soooo much garland from JoAnn this year, and used it for everywhere from the front door to our card display. I always love to have a special place to display our Christmas cards and I think this is my favorite way I've done it yet. It's just two long strands of garland on the wall with twine. When I took these photos, we hadn't had any cards come in yet but now that it's filling up, it looks even better and I love seeing our loved ones' faces when we come in the house.

LIVING ROOM

Gold Tray |  Stocking Letters | Berry Wreath | Deer Head (From Target last year) | Faux Sheepskin Rugs | Berry Stocking Fillers are from the Floral Dept in JoAnn | Buffalo Plaid and Deer Head Pillows are DIYs I did with Fabric from a local fabric store | Christmas Tree Collar Skirt | Christmas Trees on Ottoman are DIYs |

Lots of DIYs went into this room and I'm really happy with how it turned out this year. It feels so Christmas-y in here with all the red and the berries. And surprisingly, this room stays pretty well in tact despite the toddlers and puppy. The sheep skin gets moved around quite a bit, throw pillows are taken quite literally, and Wyatt likes to move around the placement of things on the ottoman. But overall, in spite of the all the messes that could be made in this room, it stays like this which is a Christmas miracle if I've ever seen one.

DINING ROOM

Copper House | Fairy Lights | Inspiration for my DIY Christmas Tree Advent | Glitter Trees (old from Target) | DIY Merry Christmas Banner made with my Silhouette | Wall Vases | Floral arrangements from Trader Joe's

The dining room needed to stay simple enough for us to eat in there 3 times a day every day, but festive enough to stay cohesive with the rest of the house. The centerpiece isn't super kid friendly since holly is pretty pointy, but since the boys aren't climbing on the dining room table (usually), I figured this was the safest place to have it. And with the red berries and bright green leaves, it's so festive and lovely. I also love a lighted centerpiece so the fairy lights were a perfect addition.

As for our advent calendar - it's probably my favorite DIY from this year, though I have to admit the idea wasn't mine. I was searching on Pinterest and saw this pin. After finding out the Etsy listing as been removed, I decided to make it myself with decorative trees, favor boxes, and little paper banners I made with my Silhouette cameo. The boxes get filled with everything from candies to stickers, to fun things to do as a family (like Christmas light looking and building a Gingerbread house) to acts of kindness like taking toys for Toys for Tots, or taking the firefighters down the road coffee and cookies. I love the idea of keeping an advent calendar through the month of December to keep us focused on the holidays because it can become so much about gifts and checking things off the list and making sure we get this done and that mailed out and before you know it, the season is over. This is a nice way to stay focused on what the season is really about, and the boys LOVE to go find out what the day's special treat is.

And that's about it for our Christmas decor round up this year. I'm so excited to have a good foundation for the living spaces so that next year I can hopefully move into the bedrooms. I especially think a guest room decked out for the holidays would be so fun to do which means I'll be clearance shopping here in a few weeks!

Are you all decorated up for the holidays? Did you DIY anything this year?
