Things I Love About Our Home
We’re starting to dive into some projects around the house, and as I gear up to share them with you, I realized that I talk about how much I want to change our home. Rip this out, change this color, and reconfigure that. And I think that’s normal for anyone and any home. Tomas and I knew that regardless of whatever house we bought, we would want to change things – even in a new build! But there’s a reason we bought this house, a few actually. So while we are sifting through our mile-long list of things we want to change, here are the things we love – the reasons we bought this house and are happy to put the work into it, making it our home.
Also, the entire downstairs of the house is in the middle of being painted, so while you feast your eyes on the things I love, please also feast your eyes on the candy that is the progress of paint!
Three Car Garage
I said this before, back during our house tour, but I LOVE having a 3-car garage. It was wonderful this winter to not have to dust snow off the cars and it’s was even better to have a work space while the cars were still parked inside. I really don’t think that if we ever move, that I could have anything less than three spaces. Plus, the door from the garage to the back yard is a huge advantage.
The Back Yard
While the back yard definitely needs some love and attention, we really like this space. We get an incredible amount of sunlight back here and there isn’t anyone directly behind us. Where we live, especially in these tighter-knit suburban neighborhoods, it’s a rare thing to find a house without sharing your back fence with someone. It’s usually nice and quiet back here, and we get a sense of privacy, which I love. 'scuse the dirt pellets - we just had the lawn aerated.
The High Ceilings
Our front living room, to the top peak, is something like 17 feet, the downstairs living room is 22 feet to the top, and our bedroom is vaulted to… 14 maybe? I love that. Our house isn’t overly big, but the vaulted ceilings make it feel very spacious and airy.
I love that from any point in the shared living spaces, I can catch the rest of the house. That’s nice as a mom, for sure, and it’s also nice for entertaining guests. It makes it feel less sectioned off. I also love that Tomas and I have those steps up to our bedroom, making our master bedroom feel like its own retreat. And I love the pass-through from the kitchen/dining to the lower level living room. I can see/hear the boys playing, and it keeps me from feeling secluded in the kitchen when we have company.
The natural light, that is. We have a total of 21 windows in this house, 5 of which are up towards the top of our vaulted rooms. They all bring in beautiful natural light throughout the day. I don’t have to turn lights on during the day at all, unless it’s in a bathroom, and because of our open floorplan, the light reaches from room to room. Yes - those top blinds are horrible. They'll be gone forever on Monday.
My favorite spot in my house is this one (below). See the alcove above the coat closet? Those walls/ceiling lines above the stair case? The railings all going up and that cool angled wall below the staircase to our bedroom? There are lots and lots of cool details in the architecture of our house and I am really excited to find cool ways to highlight these lines.
So, basically, the things I love, are the things we couldn’t change. I can put new flooring in, new paint, even replace the cabinets and all of the fixtures (all of which sit on the list). But I didn’t want to move into a home and feel like I needed to rebuild it from the foundation. And we don’t have to here. It’s also in a wonderfully quiet neighborhood with lots of families. We have wonderful neighbors, and are about a minute’s drive from both my parents and Tomas’s parents.
But my favorite thing about this house? We are directly adjacent to the neighborhoods that Tomas and I grew up in, and it’s where we fell in love. Our kids will go to the same schools we went to. They’ll walk by the spot every day in middle school where Tomas asked me to be his girlfriend and then his wife. That’s a really, really cool thing.
I love our house, I love making it into our home. One paint swatch, light fixture, and memory at a time.
Happy, Happy Friday, y'all! <3
