How to Clean Your Canvas Shoes

I love TOMS. They're the best - so comfy and cute. The only thing, is that they get dirty. I mean, maybe I'm hard on my shoes, but it's like every time I get home, I find another little spot on them.

I can't be the only person who has this problem, so today is all about how to get your beloved canvas shoes nice and clean. You know, so they can get dirty again. ;)

This works for all types of canvas shoes, not just TOMS!

What you'll need:

  • Shoes (duh)
  • Stain Remover (I use Babyganics and LOVE it, but you can use what you have, or Peroxide & Dish Soap works great, too)
  • Old Toothbrush
  • Sink for hand washing or a Washing Machine with a delicate cycle
  • Laundry Detergent
  • Wash cloth (if hand washing)

Firstly, I sprayed all of the bad spots I saw with the stain remover and let it sit for five minutes or so as I gathered the rest of my supplies. Then, in the order I sprayed them, I used the tooth brush to gently scrub the stains.

After that, I let them sit for another five minutes so the stain remover could better penetrate the stain. If your shoes are a little on the smelly side, sprinkle some baking soda in them while you do the stain treating. No need to do an extra rinse, it'll come out when you actually wash them.

For the purposes of this post, I decided to hand wash one shoe and put the other shoe in the washer. So, the washer shoe went in the washer on a delicate cycle with light colors.

And the other shoe, I chose to hand wash in our sink. To clean the shoe by hand, I wet the cloth and rubbed a little clothes detergent in it to get it kind of sudsy and then washed the shoe with the wash cloth.

I turned the faucet on low, on the sprayer setting, and rinsed it off, avoiding the area where the inside sole of the shoe meets the outside. Then, I patted it dry with a dry cloth.

The washer finished up soon after and put them out on the back patio to sit in the sun and dry for the afternoon, and brought them in to finish drying overnight.

Then, the next day, they were bright and shiny new - just like the day I first got them.
